To target a specific audience, you need to set conditions for the advertising campaign. You can set a general targeting group for all affiliates and a personal targeting group for a specific affiliate. In the article, you can learn more about the targeting group selection process.

Before you begin

Targeting group selection

By selecting the targeting group, you can define whether the click goes to the offer or to trafficback. If a click doesn't find an appropriate targeting group - either general or personal ones - it goes to trafficback.

Three criteria influence the targeting group selection:

  1. Existence of personal targeting group for the affiliate, whom the click belongs to.

  2. All fields each targeting group has (except several ones - read more about it here).

  3. Weights.

Existence of personal targeting group

The general principle is: there are at least one general targeting group and one personal targeting group for the affiliate №1. Once a click from this affiliate comes to Affise, it checks if there is a personal targeting group. If yes, it checks restrictions.

If the Consider personal targeting only option is ON, the click does not check the general targeting group if it does not meet restrictions in the personal one.

If the Consider personal targeting only option is OFF, the click checks the general targeting group.

🔎 You can find the Consider personal targeting only option on three levels:

  • Settings: Settings > Content > Targeting groups (for all offers on the platform).

  • Advertiser's edit page: Advertisers > Advertisers management > a certain advertiser > Edit advertiser (for all offers of the particular advertiser).

  • Offer edit page: Offers > a certain offer > Edit offer > Targeting groups (for the particular offer).

⚠️ The Settings level is the higher one. If you switch the Consider personal targeting only option in Settings, the checkboxes on the lower levels become "frozen" (grayed out) in a condition they had before you switched it in Settings.

Example: the offer has a general targeting group, one personal for affiliate №1. Affiliate №2 sends a click for the offer. The system checks whether there is a personal targeting group for the affiliate №2. If not, the click checks the general targeting group even when the Consider personal targeting only option is ON.

Selection by all fields of the targeting group

The general principle is: once the click comes, it looks through all fields the targeting groups have, except the Additional Tracking URL. If it doesn't meet some restrictions, the click goes to trafficback according to Trafficback settings.

The existence or absence of Additional Tracking URLs doesn't generally influence the targeting group selection. The system applies the option after the targeting group selection: if it has some Additional Tracking URLs, traffic goes to them by their weights. Read more about additional URLs & weights.

Selection by weights

Sometimes a click could meet several appropriate targeting groups:

  • When there are several appropriate personal target groups, where a click meets the All fields criteria.

  • When there are several general target groups, where a click meets the All fields criteria. No personal target groups for the particular affiliate exist.

In such a case, the system should choose only one targeting group.

Weights are points that targeting groups get for a particular field. The more points the targeting group has in general, the higher the chance of its choosing by the system.

If, after weights checking, there are still several appropriate targeting groups, the system chooses the random one.

⚠️ Don't confuse targeting weights and Additional URLs weights. It is two different options, which are not correlated with each other.
